Vitamin D could prevent tens of thousands of cancer deaths

In the recent past, science has shown that vitamin D can prevent cancer and reduce mortality in cancer patients. Specifically, there are 30,000 deaths, which can be prevented every year in Germany alone by vitamin D substitution. There are even 129,000 cases across Europe.

If everyone in Germany had access to more than 50 vitamin D preparations, the health care system would initially have to spend some money. However, if people took a dietary supplement to cover their vitamin D needs, it would mean huge savings in the long run, including treatment costs. Researchers from the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg are convinced of this. The model calculations concluded that tens of thousands of lives could be saved in Germany alone and almost 130,000 in Europe through vitamin D supplementation.

The Heidelberg research team worked with statistics on cancer mortality in Germany in 2016. They also had data from recent meta-analyzes, which showed a 13 percent reduction in cancer mortality with vitamin D.

Researchers have translated these figures into the situation in Germany: a 13 percent reduction in cancer mortality in that country means 30,000 fewer cancer deaths a year.1

Fewer cancer deaths, lower costs

In their calculation, the researchers estimated a daily intake of 1000 international units of vitamin D. If the state provided this dose of free vitamin D to all people over the age of 50 in Germany, it would cost 25 euros per person per year – with around 36 million people over the age of 50 ( in 2016), which is extrapolated to 900 million euros.

The cost of free vitamin D release would therefore be significantly lower than the calculated total of € 1,154 billion in treatment costs for around 30,000 cancer patients. The researchers estimated the additional cost of treatment at 40,000 euros in the last year of life of patients who died of cancer.

Free Vitamin D to Prevent Cancer – and Covid-19?

How much vitamin D do you need?

According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), vitamin D is adequately supplied if the concentration of the 25-hydroxyvitamin D marker in the blood is at least 50 nmol / l (or 20 ng / ml). Vitamin deficiency is reported from a serum concentration of this marker of less than 30 nanomolar per liter of serum (30 nmol / L). This corresponds to 12 nanograms per milliliter of serum (12 ng / ml).3
