Vitamin D against cancer? Its use should make it possible to prevent tens of thousands of cancer deaths

Halle (Saale) / DUR / acs – Vitamin D is important for the human body. It supports the absorption of calcium in the intestine and ensures strong bones and teeth. It also affects muscle strength and contributes to a functioning immune system. There is even evidence that low levels of vitamin D increase the risk of acute respiratory infections.

Vitamin D prevents cancer and reduces patient mortality

Science has now also shown that vitamin D can prevent cancer and reduce cancer patients’ mortality. Researchers at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg are convinced that if people took a dietary supplement to cover their vitamin D needs, it would mean huge savings in the long run, such as treatment costs.

The model calculations concluded that tens of thousands of lives could be saved in Germany alone and almost 130,000 in Europe with vitamin D supplements.

On the one hand, the research team worked with statistics on cancer mortality in Germany in 2016. It also had data from the latest meta-analyzes, which found a 13 percent reduction in cancer mortality with vitamin D.

About 30,000 cancer deaths a year in Germany is possible thanks to vitamin D

Applying the results to Germany, a 13 percent reduction in cancer mortality would mean approximately 30,000 fewer cancer deaths per year. Across Europe, 129,000 cancer deaths could be prevented.

The cost of free vitamin D to all people over the age of 50 in Germany would be lower than the calculated cost of treatment for around 30,000 cancer patients a year.

Researchers are urging the elderly population to have free access to vitamin D. This could potentially prevent or promote treatment of diseases other than cancer. Including Covid-19.
