The US Congress has approved a slight tightening of weapons laws

EFor the first time in decades, the US Congress passed a bilateral law to improve protection against firearms. The Democrat-led House of Representatives passed the bill on Friday by a vote of 234 to 193. It must now be signed by US President Joe Biden.

It was previously approved by the US Senate. Experts rate the tightening of arms laws as the most significant at the federal level since the mid-1990s – although this was a supra-party minimum compromise that critics criticize as completely inadequate.

About a month ago, 19 children and two teachers were shot dead in a Texas elementary school massacre. This act caused terror all over the country. The Group of Democrats and Republicans then worked on a compromise for stricter weapons laws.

Biden’s request remains unfulfilled

Biden said that “after a 28-year stalemate” over arms possession laws, officials on both sides acted to tackle the “plague of arms violence.” “A bilateral law will help protect Americans.” This will make children safer in schools and communities. ”

Democrat Biden has previously called the law insufficient, but a step in the right direction. The law does not include a ban on assault rifles required by Biden and other Democrats.

Among other things, the new law provides for more intensive screening of arms buyers under the age of 21. It is also an extension of state laws that allow the confiscation of weapons to potentially dangerous people. The illegal arms trade should be punished at the federal level. In addition, billions of US dollars are to be invested in mental health care and anti-violence programs. The funds are also intended for school security.

Many Republicans argue that the increase in gunfire is due to an increase in mental illness, not the easy availability of weapons.

Amid a debate on gun violence on Thursday, the country’s supreme court extended the right to bear arms in public. The Supreme Court overturned a more than 100-year-old New York state law that requires you to have a valid reason to obtain permission to carry a weapon hidden away from home. Two men complained. Similar laws exist in states like California, New Jersey or Massachusetts. On the other hand, there are almost no restrictions in other parts of the United States.

“We are not aware of any other constitutional law that individuals can only exercise if they can demonstrate a special need to the authorities,” the verdict said. The court ruling was six to three – three judges believed to be liberal did not join the Conservative majority.
