Over the years, obese children develop lower cognitive abilities than their more able peers. This was shown by a 30-year observation by Monash University http://monash.edu and the University of Tasmania http://utas.edu.au with more than 1,200 children in Australia. Experts summarize attention, memory, learning, creativity, planning and orientation under cognitive abilities. According to them, education, such as university, socioeconomic status in childhood and later smoking or alcohol consumption do not falsify the result.

Tendency to dementia in old age

According to Jamie Taita and Michele Callisaya of Monash University and their colleagues, in 1985, researchers measured exactly 1,244 children between the ages of seven and 15 in terms of fitness (cardiovascular system, muscle strength, endurance) and body measurements. Between 2017 and 2019, when the participants were 39 to 50 years old, the researchers evaluated their cognitive abilities. Result: Decreased cognitive performance began in some participants as early as middle age. They have experienced mild cognitive impairment in middle age, which can lead to dementia in old age.

According to Callisay, it is important to identify the risks of cognitive impairment in time. “Developing strategies to improve fitness and reduce childhood obesity is important because it can help improve cognitive performance in middle age,” he says. It is particularly important that protective strategies against future cognitive decline must be developed in early childhood “so that the brain can build up sufficient reserves against the development of diseases such as dementia in old age”.
