Michael Patrick Kelly: The right time for espresso and herb brandy

How are you preparing for the September concerts?

Michael Patrick Kelly: In order to prepare for the tour, I have to get in good shape physically. When I sing, more than 100 muscles work – a lot of small muscles that you would not otherwise notice or know. A few weeks before the start of the tour, I get on a treadmill and sing the whole show while running. The body thus gets used to being in motion and has to sing for more than two hours. In addition, I have my blood levels checked to see if I have enough vitamin D, iron, etc.

During the hike, I pay a lot of attention to my diet so that I have enough carbohydrates and proteins. I have a humidifier for my voice in my locker room, because the air in the halls where we play is often very dry. In addition, I always have a thermos with fresh ginger tea, which I sweeten with buckwheat honey.

Just before the concerts, I drink espresso and sometimes a sip of herbal brandy. On the one hand, “lubricate” the vocal cords and on the other hand, calm the stomach, because I am always happy before the start. After concerts, I take electrolytes and a lot of water because I sweat a lot. Of course, it’s not as much as for a performance athlete, but it’s going in the right direction. I drink at least 3 liters a day on tour.
