Redesigned
Let the old furniture shine in the new splendor or even give it a completely new function: This is exactly what the new myHOMEBOOK “Refurbished” series is about! In the first episode, professional DIY and upcycling Thomas Klotz shows us what you can do with an old chair.
What do you do with an old chair where the upholstery is broken and the wood shows its age? That’s right, upcycle! Because that piece of furniture is too good to be easily thrown away. Together with DIY expert Thomas Klotz from Berlin, we show in the new series “Upholstered” how completely new things can be created from old furniture. In the first episode, the old chair becomes a new garden of chairs. We’ll show you how it works in the video!
Cycle the chair – what do you need?

Step by step instructions for garden chairs
Building a garden of chairs yourself is relatively easy with a little skill. Thanks to detailed instructions, the project is also something for upcycling beginners. Here’s how it works:
- Remove the upholstery first. For many old chairs, this is loose in the frame and can be easily removed.
- Peel off the fabric and use the frame as a template for the new board. Draw the outline with a pencil.
- The board is then cut with a jigsaw. Important: To prevent anything from slipping, the board must be secured with screw clamps.
- Then it’s time to hone. If a few dirty edges appear, this is not a problem – they can be easily sanded.
- The next step is the pot holes in the hob. A small calculation is required to prevent the containers from failing. We will show what it is in the video.
- Then you draw the compass and you can cut it out with a jigsaw puzzle. However, since you cannot get into the circle with the saw blade, you must first pre-drill a hole.
- Then the wooden board is sanded so that the unsightly edges disappear. Depending on the condition of the old chair, it must then at least be sanded.
- Then comes the painting – you can use the so-called “chalk color”. It needs two to three coats of paint and a seal with wax or clear coat.
- If you want to give the chair a shabby chic look, you can patinate it. This vintage look is achieved with dark wax, which is applied irregularly to the corners and edges.
- Finally, only flower pots with herbs and small labels are missing – the garden of the chairs is ready!
