A current international in vitro study demonstrates the / multi-target effect of benzyl mustard oil against MRSA

Eschborn – According to a recent meta-analysis published in The Lancet, antibiotic-resistant bacteria were responsible for at least 1.2 million deaths worldwide in 2019.[1]. To avoid the problem of resistance, experts have been calling for antibiotics for uncomplicated infections, such as urinary tract and respiratory infections, for many years, but prefer proven antibacterial herbal substances such as mustard oils (isothiocyanates) from licorice and horseradish (in ANGOCIN® Anti-infective N) as first-line therapy[2]. Uwe Frank from Freiburg, who is responsible for basic research into mustard oils.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and thus one of the greatest threats to human health, as explained by the authors of an analysis published in the Lancet.[1]. Due to the multimodal effects of mustard oils, the development of possible mechanisms of resistance in bacteria is significantly more difficult[13-15]. “Given the dramatic development of resistance and the search for new antimicrobials that do not cause resistance, the anti-infective potential of mustard oils is therefore of great value,” concludes Frank. Numerous other research projects also confirm that the herbal medicine has a strong anti-inflammatory effect, which significantly contributes to the improvement of the symptoms of acute respiratory and urinary tract infections.[16-18].

Licorice root and horseradish recommended in two directives

Based on comprehensive scientific data on the effectiveness of mustard oils from licorice and horseradish was their use

2017 recommended in guideline S3 “uncomplicated urinary tract infections” for recurrent cystitis[19].
