Although gooseberries originally probably grew in Asia, tough berries managed to take root on European soil many centuries ago. Gooseberry shrubs and hedges have come from northern Europe since the Middle Ages. As a regional and seasonal soft fruit, gooseberry simply belongs to summer. Depending on the variety, gooseberries, which belong to the genus Currant, ripen from June to August.

Almost 50 percent of the world’s gooseberry production is produced in this country. The first batches of delicious berries are already available at weekly markets and supermarkets. With just 150 grams of gooseberries, you can get more than a quarter of the recommended daily fiber. Gooseberries quickly saturate due to the high content of insoluble vegetable fiber. The fibers swell in the stomach and other digestive tracts. Thanks to this increase in volume, a feeling of satiety arrives quickly. Foods high in fiber, such as gooseberries, move more slowly through the digestive system, which is another reason for the long-lasting effect of satiety. Digestion is also stimulated. The larger volume of stool stimulates receptors and nerve cells in the inner walls of the intestine, which support the natural rhythm of digestion and defecation.

2. Regulate the rise in blood sugar

Gooseberries can have a positive effect on stable blood sugar levels. The fiber it contains, such as pectin, slows down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. This avoids fluctuations in blood sugar, which inevitably leads to craving when there is an excess of insulin left in the blood. The study found that gooseberry extract may have an alpha-glucoside inhibitory effect. The enzyme transports sugar from digested food in the intestines into the bloodstream. When inhibited, less sugar enters the bloodstream. Blood sugar levels remain stable.

Gooseberries are rich in antioxidant plant substances such as phenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins. These can protect blood vessels and nerve cells from oxidative stress and prevent the development of age-related degenerative diseases. Healthy acids such as citric, malic and tartaric acids seem to be particularly important for brain health. They are all found in gooseberries and, according to studies, can prevent the accumulation of iron in cells. Elevated levels of cellular iron can increase the release of free radicals in the body. These aggressive oxygen compounds are responsible for degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
